CAT Structure
The exam is extremely volatile and its pattern keeps on changing frequently. On a broad level, the overall syllabus can be divided in three sections: Verbal Ability, Logical Reasoning & Data Interpretation and Quantitative Aptitude.
After the results are declared, each IIM will declare a separate cut off list for shortlisting candidates for the selection procedure. The cut off comprises of an overall cut off and a sectional cut off. Sectional cut off is the percentile a candidate must score in each section of the test paper. The overall cut off for the IIMs generally, falls in the bracket of 90-99 percentile. Find College Wise CAT Cutoff

CAT 2020 Selection Procedure
After the declaration of results and cut-offs, shortlisted candidates appear in the selection process which is held separately by each of the IIMs. The selection procedure through CAT EXAM may consist of a Group Discussion and/or Written Ability Test round and, Personal Interview. In recent years, IIMs have been known to prefer Written Ability Test over Group Discussion. Check GD/PI tips for CAT 2020
A personal Interview is also an important part of the selection procedure and can prove to be a decisive factor in selection to IIMs. The final selection is based on performance in CAT and selection procedure rounds.
Written Ability Test comprises of one or more topics on which a candidate is required to write a brief essay. The time duration assigned to write an essay on the given topic varies from IIM to IIM and can be anywhere between 15 minutes to 45 minutes.
Group Discussion round is less preferred these days but it is wise to prepare for this round as well. In this round, a group of 8-10 candidates is given a topic to discuss. Through this round, a candidate’s performance and group dynamics are assessed.
The personal interview round is the final round. In this round, a candidate has to appear before a panel of 4-8 interviewers who test the candidate on their academic background, work experience, hobbies, interests, etc.
CAT 2016 Analysis
CAT 2016 was as difficult or as easy as any of the previous CAT papers. The exam was conducted on 4th December 2016 in two different sessions across the country and more than 2 lakh applicants appeared for the exam. The test was conducted by IIM Bangalore this year. The exam was conducted smoothly across centres as per students, albeit there were a few glitches faced by few students at some centers.
The test interface was provided on the official CAT website much before the exam.
Some points about CAT 2016 to note down:
- VA RC section was broken in sub-sections of VA and RC. It comprised of 24 RC questions and 10 VA questions. The overall time available for this section was 1 hour.
- LR DI section was also broken in sub sections of LR and DI. It comprised of 16 LR questions and 16 DI questions. The overall time available for this section was 1 hour.
- QA section comprised of 34 questions and was to be attempted in the last one hour of the exam.
- There was an on-screen calculator available for basic computation
- A good number of questions in all three sections were non-MCQ. The students needed to type in the answers to these questions using the on-screen keyboard. These questions did not attract any negatives marks.
Every correct answer fetched 3 marks. A wrong answer in MCQ questions attracted a penalty of -1 mark, whereas the wrong answer in non-MCQ questions did not attract any negative marks.
The exam was reported to be of almost the same difficulty level as CAT 2015 paper. A score of about 180 out of 300 fetched students around 99 percentile in the exam. A score of 150 out of 300 fetched around 97 percentile in the exam.
Section-wise Analysis
This section was very similar to the CAT 2015 paper. In verbal ability section, there were no questions from grammar and vocabulary. Reading comprehension had 3 passages of 6 questions each and 2 passages of 3 questions each. The passages were of moderate level and none of them were from abstract topics.
An attempt of 26 questions with 85% accuracy can be considered to be good in this section.
This was the make-or-break section for most students in Cat 2016. The section can be categorized as difficult and time-taking. The logical reasoning sets were difficult to crack and needed lots of practice and speed to crack. Data interpretation sets were calculation-intensive.
14-15 attempts with 85% accuracy can be considered to be good in this section. Many students found this section extremely taxing and tiring, and as a result, felt fatigued by the time this section got over. Ideal strategy for this section would have been to identify three crackable sets and get 12 questions correct, and then try to maximize the scores in the easier sections.
Just like Cat 2015, this section was of easy to moderate difficulty level in Cat 2016 too. A good number of questions were short and direct, and a student with a solid foundation could have found it easy to solve at least 18 questions in this section.
An attempt of 24 questions with 85% accuracy can be considered to be good in this section.
Overall, the paper was of moderate difficulty level, and a thorough preparation coupled with mock CAT test series appearance and analysis would have helped an average student score of 150 out of 300 in the paper, or close to 97 percentile.

We are different from the conventional coaching centres. We don’t aim to create scholars! CAT has never been about solving extremely difficult questions and proving oneself to be a Maths genius! It only tests basic Maths, decision making ability and the ability to handle pressure. Most of our competitors pride themselves in giving extremely difficult questions to students in classes, study materials and Mocks. We hit the actual CAT level. Our only focus is to maximize your CAT score, not to make you a Maths genius or to project ourselves as a “Difficult” questions hub.
We offer CAT classroom courses of different durations depending on the requirements of the students. Apart from the regular classrooms and online mock tests, the course comprises of one-on-one checkpoints for every students. This is our unique innovation in which we provide students with personal targets and schedules every 15 days. Online Test Series
We offer a set of 20 online mock CATs that are closest to the actual CAT exams. In our country, we are obsessed with difficult questions, and it is reflected in the Mock CAT series provided by most of the players in the market. We keep our mocks to the actual CAT level. We believe that solving unnecessarily difficult questions is not going to help you much in cracking CAT. Developing a strong decision making ability, selecting the questions to attempt and the ones to leave and proper time management are the more important skills that we focus on. After all, these are the skills that the IIMs are looking for from budding managers. Remember, They are not looking for Maths geniuses!
Our study material has been designed by group of experts who have taken CAT in the recent years and scored well. We keep the books and materials updated as per the requirements of the students and as per the changing patterns of the volatile exam. New relevant topics are added, and non-relevant topics omitted from our books every year.
The online account comprises of multiple questions for students of different difficulty levels, to get them prepared step-by-step to the challenge of CAT. These questions are also accessible from the IBT mobile app.
